British America’s Cup campaigners Land Rover BAR are hoping a custom built mobile app could give them a competitive advantage on the water when racing begins in Bermuda at the end of May. The tactical app, developed jointly by British telecoms company BT band UK tech start up Coderus, will be used by the team’s helmsman Ben Ainslie and tactician Giles Scott to display critical information throughout the race.
Dongfeng Race Team have confirmed four more crew members for their 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race campaign, including the returning Chinese trio of Black, Wolf and Horace. The Chinese sailors are Jiru Yang, aged 26, who uses the English name Wolf; Liu Xue, 24, known as Black, and Chen Jinhao, 25, Horace. They are joined by Australian/British sailor Jack Bouttell in a four-strong squad of Under-30s in Charles Caudrelier’s Chinese-backed team.

Spanish Volvo Ocean Race team MAPFRE has dismasted on a training run from their team base in Sanxenxo, Spain. The incident happened at 17:15hrs local time on Thursday while the team was sailing about seven nautical miles SW of the island of Ons (Pontevedra) in around 25 knots of wind and four metre high waves. The Spanish boat's mast broke below the first spreader.
