Fourth Volvo Ocean Race team announced but not revealed

Fourth Volvo Ocean Race team announced but not revealed

Volvo Ocean Race has announced that a fourth team has been confirmed for the 2017-18 edition of the race. However, the race organisers say the identity of team four will remain a mystery until later this month.

A little over seven months before the start of the first leg in October three syndicates - Team AkzoNobel (NED), Dongfeng Race Team (CHN) and MAPFRE (ESP) - have confirmed their entries.

Seven Volvo Ocean 65 yachts from the 2014-15 race have recently undergone an extensive refit at the race’s Boatyard facility in Lisbon and a new boat for team AkzoNobel under construction in Italy is due to launch by June.

According to a press release from Volvo Ocean Race today the full fleet is unlikely to be announced before the summer.

“The one-design concept has reduced the need for teams to begin their campaigns as early as in previous editions,” the release read. “There is no reason why a campaign getting off the ground this summer can't go on and win the trophy.
