Challenging for the America's Cup? There's an App for that...
British America’s Cup campaigners Land Rover BAR are hoping a custom built mobile app could give them a competitive advantage on the water when racing begins in Bermuda at the end of May.
The tactical app, developed jointly by British telecoms company BT band UK tech start up Coderus, will be used by the team’s helmsman Ben Ainslie and tactician Giles Scott to display critical information throughout the race.
The app will run on waterproof Android tablets and smart watches and has been designed to provide critical data about the strategic layout of the course, the position of the boat, how many legs of the race are left and how far it is to the next boundary, all allowing the sailors to make rapid tactical decisions and give them maximum time for manoeuvring.
It will also help the crew identify exactly when to power up for maximum speed at the start gun enabling them to reach the first turning marker in the lead - a key factor considering 80 per cent of races are expected to be won by the leader at the first marker.
“We were desperate for an app which could act as a virtual seventh crew member and become central to our decision-making process during the race, providing Ben and I with the data that we really need to gain a competitive advantage,” said Scott. “We’ve had great support from BT and Coderus through all stages of the development, from design, build and now refinement out on the water.”
